THE RESULTS ARE IN!

Bright fortunes are here instilled for the winners of the 4um-community-driven contest of "All the Brightness".

It began as a simple idea: An intrigued glow in one's mind of the unique and surprising works of Björk's latest work, Medúlla. Within this pith-fueled piece are the odd yet infinitely intriguing intermissions of "Öll Birtan" and "Miðvikudags". The are songs composed solely of Björk's voice, layered and mixed to produce a very human sound. How would it be if a person would take this idea and apply their own inspirations and talents to produce a work for others to enjoy and critique. This was "All the Brightness". And with the help of the ever-helpful webmaster and rennaissance woman LaLaVox, this idea became a reality.

We received our 20 contestants, each offering their own totally unique takes of Medúlla-based inspiration. We spotlighted them. We even made availabe a myriad of other works, this time non-competing, which showed equal amounts of drive and spirit as the others, even given a larger range! Then it was voting time. 3 points for your first pick, 2 points for your second, and 1 point for your third. These were our contestants:

*3RD PLACE - CONTESTANT #18 - tantan's "Darkness' Own Flame"
Country: from Mauritius Island (but currently studying in Singapore...) ---- Equipment used for and/or inspiration for this track: * Technical process: I used MediaSource Player for recording, Nero Wave Editor for basic editing and Steinberg Wavelab for further editing and mixing. -- * Creative process: A lot of intuition and improvisation... I actually started writing a structured song, but I soon realized it wouldn't work. What was most difficult: the lead vocals!! I would've wanted to give it more power but the song decided otherwise. :p -- * Which is why I changed the title from "Aestas" ('summer' or 'moment of summer' or 'summer air' in Latin poetry) to "Darkness' Own Flame", which I think is more suitable: the song is quite dark, but I can smell a pinch of hope... ;) -- * I wrote lyrics in english and I translated them in gibberish...

**2ND PLACE - CONTESTANT #11 - cheekypixies =o)'s "My Medulla"
Country: England ---- Equipment used for and/or inspiration for this track: The equipment used was -- *ARCHOS jukebox recorder 20 - (to record the vocals) -- *Cool Edit Pro (to chop it all about). -- My inspiration for "My Medulla" and the bonus was basically a very dull and wet lazy sunday, feeling moderately hung over from an extremely heavy night on the vodka in town the evening before. And kind of slowly awakening and coming out of the lazy haze. I know - not the most original titles, but I was thinking that I wanted to keep the tracks as raw as possible and by giving something a name or a title, it kind of puts differing thoughts into the listeners head and they already have ideas about the track before they hear it. Anyway, I hope you enjoy chilling out and enjoying them. Thanks.

***1ST PLACE - CONTESTANT #14 - kenneth's "My Rotting Teeth"
Country: USA ---- Equipment used for and/or inspiration for this track: to make this track i used Sonic Foundry Acid aaaaaand the microphone that came with my computer. there are 8 tracks in all that make up the song (minus the lead vocals and the special noise at the end!), and only 2 of them had any pitch shifts or editing (the Dooy Dum Dum and the quick SS SS SS noises... if that makes sense...). the latter is originally taken from my impression of Rachael Ray from the food network. One of the other noises is a vocal exercise i did once in a district chorus. i recommend headphones for ultimate listening pleasure aaand yah i think thats it!

Congratulations to the winners and EVERYONE who participated! All you guy's did wonderful jobs, in such different ways. One things you should know is that with almost every vote we received a comment was made about how stiff the competition was; one clear winner was almost an improbability! ;D

Official word on prizes is that they will be handled post-new year's (2005) and will consist of a prize for each of our top 3 winners. Prize distribution may very well coincide with the "Triumph Of A Heart" single release. 1st place will then receive (based on the "Who Is It" single release) the TOAH singles 1 2 along with the single's DVD, 2nd place receives both of the cd singles, 1 2; 3rd place receives 1 cd single, their choice of CD 1 or 2. Of course the prizes may be arranged to meet the same value of the prizes listed here, composed of any combination of Björk merchandise (singles, cds, dvds, books...) It would do well for winners to contact me or lalavox about prize concerns early on so that we can get things sorted. ;)

Just checking in quickly this morning to see if things got posted during the night after I followed the call of my pillows and bedsheets - and yes they did! CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR WINNERS! -And also to those not in the top three!!! Everyone sent in interesting work, and I heard many comments of, "I can only pick 3 favorites???"

I have to rush off for a very long day of work and rehearsal, but hope to get the news updated to the contest pages themselves sometime late tonight Central European Time.

Happy Birthday Björk - and thank you for reminding us of a way to make music that is immediate, non-threatening, and based on sounds made only with the human body. Observing you go back to your roots with MEDULLA is what sparked Uglyness/Gungalei's idea for this contest in the first place, and is what has inspired all these 4um members - some of whom had never picked up a microphone and sung into it before now - to make all these tracks and enter our contest. Thank you for being so musically generous and for inspiring all of this experimental vocal activity. And I think I speak on behalf of Uglyness/Gungalei and all of our "All the Brightness" contestants when I say that we hope you are having the very best of all possible birthdays!!!

Four contestants will be spotlighted each day (and their tracks made available for downloading that day) at the 4um and on the contest-download page. After the last spotlight has been presented (Spotlight#5) all of the bonus tracks will be added to the contest-download-page as well, and the day after that voting can officially begin. If we are able to begin the spotlights tomorrow, then it will be possible for voting to begin on the following Saturday (Nov.27th)...

....Doing this contest-page HTML tonight, and trying to make sure I'm getting all the details right, is helping to clear my head and helping me to figure out who still needs to be written to and so on. ...We have 20 contestants for our All The Brightness contest by the way (yipee!!! :-D) - and some very nice bonus tracks as well. I'm hoping that I can get emails out to a lot of you tonight, although now it's getting later and later and I still have a bunch of stuff to prepare for a presentation I have to make tomorrow - so I don't know how many I'll manage after all (that's what I get for making promises). Whatever the case, I'm hoping that we can manage to start presenting the spotlights here at the 4um by Saturday. I was hoping for Friday, but Saturday is beginning to look more realistic...

Hi folks. Just thought I'd let you know that the track that they are sending is a non-competing bonus track, and that they told me they were working on it (but were having difficulties getting it finished because of time differences) before the contest entry deadline had arrived. But because of this, and also because of another request I've had since the 14th, I've decided that anyone who still wants to can send me non-competing bonus tracks (as long as it is a track that fits into the theme of the contest) until Monday of next week (November 22nd). The non-competing bonus tracks will appear at the bottom of the contest download page AFTER all of the contestant spotlights have been presented. So if you missed joining in in the competition here's your chance to at least have a bonus track on the download page. :-)

Saturday, October 16th, 2004 - Contest Update #2 (a rule we forgot / spotlighting / voting / bonus tracks)

Hello again!

LaLaVox here, on behalf of Uglyness/Gungalei and myself, with further 'All The Brightness' contest updates. In our last update Uglyness/Gungalei mentioned that we were considering two different models for going about presenting and voting on the contest entries: a tournament model (with contestants competing head to head, two a day) and a spotlight model. We've decided to go with the spotlight model...

Presentation of contest entries and voting:

After the contest entry deadline on Nov. 8th, we'll allow ourselves a couple of days to get everything set up and then we'll begin spotlighting 3 entries a day at the 4um. Each day 3 new tracks will become available for downloading (from links presented at the 4um) and we'll say a word or two about each contestant and their track. We will collect each spotlight onto a contest-download page as they're presented - so there will always be one address you can go to to catch up on things if you happen to miss something. Voting will not begin until all of the contest entries have been spotlighted.

Contestants: when you send me your entry, please also be sure to send me your 4um screen name and a couple of sentences about yourself and your track - for instance, which country you're from and what equipment, techniques, etc you used to record and produce your track. (If you don't want to tell us which country you're from, then make up a new one. If you don't want to tell us how you recorded your track then tell us the idea behind it or your inspiration for it perhaps...)

Voters: please vote for 3 tracks - your #1, your #2, and your #3. Send your votes to me at lalavox at yahoo dot de. We don't know exactly how much time we want to allow for voting yet, but we want to be sure and give you all enough time to get comfortable with all of the tracks before having to make a decision on which your 3 favorites are. Suggestions are more than welcome, either to me (at lalavox at yahoo dot de once again) or to Uglyness/Gungalei (at singultire at hotmail dot com). Contestants are allowed to vote too, by the way; and we insist that you put your own track in the #1 spot when you vote. We figure if you were energetic and daring enough to enter, then you deserve one automatic #1 vote just for that! ;-) =-D

A contest rule we forgot to add last time:

Yes, hmmm. We forgot to mention that actually only one entry per contestant is allowed. This detail was stated at some point over at the 4um, but we overlooked it in our update. Since a couple of people have recently asked about 2nd entries, we've decided to do the following...

Non-competing bonus tracks:

Uglyness/Gungalei and I had already planned to add our own tracks as non-competing bonus tracks down at the bottom of the contest download page. Now we've decided that any contestant who would like to can also present a 2nd track as a non-competing bonus track. These bonus tracks will not be included in the spotlights at the 4um, but they will appear on the contest download page underneath the competing entries after all of the spotlights have been presented.

We're also giving the contestants who are energetic enough to send in 2 tracks the option of switching these 2 tracks later. In other words, if you send in an entry on Monday and a bonus track on Friday, and then decide on Saturday that you think you'd rather have the Friday track as your entry and the Monday track as your bonus track instead, just let me know and I'll switch them for you. This option will remain open until the entry deadline on November 8th!

Well, I think that's more then enough blah-blah for one day. One more tidbit of information before I go though. We have 13 contestants currently (two of whom are gals) - and about 3 guys who are planning to join in soon (that I know of personally). Keep those entries coming, folks! - Less than a month to go...

Sunday, October 10th, 2004 - Contest Update #1 (contest rules / how to enter / entry deadline)

Hello everyone!

Uglyness/Gungalei here, on behalf of LaLaVox and myself, to give you some updates about the current contest underway at the 4um - known officially as the 'All The Brightness' contest and less officially as the 'Komid or Medúlla Song Contest'. Just in case you've been living under a rock over at the 4um I've compiled all the information you'd ever need to know about our contest here. :)

What we're doing here:

In the same vein of the vocal montage vignettes featured in Björk's new album 'Medúlla', contestants are to create their own vocal montages. Layer the sounds in an audio program like Audacity or Goldwave (etc...) to create short little songs like that of "Öll Birtan", "Miðvikudags", and "Komið". The songs should NOT be copied, only taken as an inspirational example. This is not a contest of how well you sing: It is a competition of creativity in how you compose your work and the uniqueness of it. Any hoarse toad with a hand for a mouse can enter. ;)

Rules:

1. Use only YOUR VOICE. Sounds derived and sampled from your voice are allowed also to allow for some more creativity.

2. You may use samples of Björk's voice, but these should be minimal and your voice should take the spotlight in the vignette.

3. Songs should have a relatively simple structure and run about 1 to 2 minutes long.

4. All submissions due by November 8th, 2004. NO EXCEPTIONS!

Procedure:

Once you're done producing your track and are ready to show it to the world, send it to LaLaVox at lalavox at yahoo dot de. You can also opt to show off your work in the 4um as well, as many others have already done - although that could possibly taint your chances of winning (people getting bored with the track, people copying ideas).

LaLaVox is hosting this contest on her site, lalavoxbox.com, so she will be putting up a webpage once all the details are worked out and the submissions are all together. We've got around 12 submissions currently but we'd like to see more female participants too, as there are only 2 out of that 12 at the moment.

We are currently debating what the best way to vote on the submissions would be once the time comes. As you can imagine, it would be pretty overwhelming (especially for non-DSL users) to download 15+ mp3s all at once and have to try to make a judgment from there. This is why I've come up with a tournament-style voting model where every day or two 2 contestants are put head-to-head with only the 2 files available to download and voting on these two tracks at that exact point. Now, it can be seen as a little harsh to do it this way, so LaLaVox came up with the more laid-back idea of spotlighting 3 submissions at the 4um every day or two - including cool little infos on each track and contestant - and the voting then beginning once all of the tracks have been spotlighted. We'd really like to hear your feelings on how to do this, so let us hear your opinions over at the 4um or please either email me at singultire at hotmail dot com or LaLaVox at, again, lalavox at yahoo dot de.

LaLaVox and myself will also be submitting our own pieces for the contest - however they will be non-competing tracks and there just as a bonus. :)

We are still working out the kinks in this facet of the contest! Just know this: The prizes will be worth it! Of course it would go as 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places and *maybe*possibly* a prize for an honorable mention. ;)
